LifeGRID is a project financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) that aims at developing rescue and care concepts for vulnerable people in disaster situations such as floods and power outages lasting for several days. The key beneficiaries of this project are the populations, care facilities and nursing staff as well as disaster management actors. They all are involved in the implementation of the integrated rescue and care concepts.

The district of Wesermarsch, which covers an area of 822 km², partly below sea level, is surrounded by water, the North Sea, Weser, Hunte and Jade rivers.

In addition to the geographical location, there is the ongoing demographic change and increasingly frequent extreme weather events. This combination poses major challenges for the population, but also for care facilities and disaster management actors.

People who are already dependent on care, medical care or other support in everyday life are particularly vulnerable in disaster situations. To overcome these challenges, the LifeGRID project has brought together science, the municipal sector, aid organizations and other operators of critical infrastructures, such as energy and water suppliers, to jointly develop innovative solutions.

We have planned various activities and measures to be implemented during the project. More information will follow soon.  These include

-      Raising awareness among the population in the district of Wesermarsch

-      Raising awareness among outpatient and inpatient care facilities and people in need of care

-      Installation of emergency power supply for retirement and nursing homes

-      Training of nursing staff to prepare them for disasters

-      Establishment of central contact points for the accommodation of people in need of care

-      Emergency care packages for people receiving care at home

-      Scientific monitoring of the measures in for the sake of recommendations and transferability to other regions
